![Today marks 35 years since my family left Damascus, Syria, and arrived in Chicago in search of a new beginning.
I was 13 years old, scared, overwhelmed, and trying to navigate a new country, language, and culture. Watching my parents rebuild their lives from the ground up taught me that success isn’t about where you start, it’s about your willingness to keep moving forward.
Years later, I found myself doing the same. I left Chicago for San Diego, put my science career on hold to raise my children, and eventually discovered my passion for photography. What started as a hobby became a career that allowed me to build a successful studio, work with incredible clients, and see my work featured in national publications.
In 2020, the pandemic closed my studio, and our family moved back to Chicago after 16 years in California. Once again, I found myself starting over. I took a leap of faith, opened a new studio in Oak Brook 5 years ago today and trusted the process.
Today, I stand here as a proud immigrant, business owner of 19 years, wife, mother, daughter, and friend.
My journey is proof that the American dream is still alive. Not because success is handed to you, but because with hard work, faith, determination, and the courage to begin again, incredible things can happen.
Never be afraid to start over. Sometimes that’s exactly where the magic begins.

Known for her warm approach and meticulous eye, she combines elite surgical training with a patient-centered philosophy focused on subtle, sophisticated results. Her practice, Akinosun Aesthetics @akinosunaesthetics will be opening in Oakbrook this summer, and I’m so excited for her and this next chapter.

Another year around the sun… and at this stage, I’m not chasing anything anymore, I’m choosing. Choosing what aligns, what feels right, and what reflects who I’ve worked so hard to become. Everything I’ve built came from staying true to myself, working hard, and not being afraid to do things differently, and I’m really proud of that.
And at this age, I’ve become more intentional with my time and my circle. Less about the big crowds, more about real connection. Smaller, closer, better. I choose who I spend my time with, and I’m not meant to be for everyone… and I’m okay with that.
And the red ? it’s intentional. It’s the Year of the fire Horse, I’m a Horse, and an Aries ♈️ so fire on fire. Red just felt right. Strong, confident, and fully in my power.

![Happy Birthday to one of the oldest and dearest friendships of my life @arsiak ?
I met Arsi when I was 13 years old…a brand-new immigrant from Syria, trying to figure out this whole new world in Chicago. She was visiting her family two doors down for the summer. She had the sweetest Southern accent from Arkansas and the kindest heart. From day one, she made me feel seen, safe, and welcome. We would play outside till the sun came down and sit in-front of my house on the steps and talk about life, hair, makeup….I couldn’t wait for her to visit every summer as she was truly my first friend here.
34 years later… here we are. Still friends. Still growing. Still doing life together as women, as mothers, as creatives ??
Some friendships are meant to last a season.
Some are meant to walk with you through every version of you.
So grateful for you, Arsi. Your heart has always been open, and I’ll never forget how you welcomed a girl from another country like she belonged.

![I am an immigrant.
I came to this country at 13 years of age from Damascus, Syria not knowing exactly how it would all work out, but believing deeply in the idea of starting over.
My parents left everything familiar behind so we could have opportunity, safety, and a future built on hard work and values. Like so many immigrant families, we didn’t come with entitlement, we didn’t come to take, but we came with gratitude, resilience, and the willingness to work twice as hard. At the age of 16 I had 3 jobs while attending high school.
Immigrants are not a headline or a talking point. We are business owners, caregivers, teachers, artists, builders, and parents raising the next generation of Americans. Especially right now, when immigration is being spoken about with fear and division, I think it’s important to remember this truth: America was built by people who came from somewhere else, carrying hope and determination in their hands.
I am proud of where I come from. I am grateful for the life I’ve built here. And I believe this country is stronger when it remembers that immigrants don’t weaken it but we help build it.
This is my story. And it’s one I’ll always stand behind.
